New year resolution - Five steps to make it happen this year!

The New Year is the time for new desires and rejuvenated aspirations as it gives us the hope that the new year is a time for new beginnings. It marks the end and beginning of another year. We hope that it will end all the past miseries and misfortunes.

We make new resolutions and promise to change our habits or pick up a new activity.

Why do resolutions fail?

As we get absorbed in the routine and cope with the grind of work and life, the resolutions fall short in priority and eventually get lost!

Have you ever felt a sudden urge to take action for a social cause after listening to all the harm it is causing to society or to help someone in distress, and the urge soon loses priority, and you forget about it?

But some people become drivers of change and make things happen for themselves and those around them. What do they do differently? What do you need to do differently?

Just like a certain amount of energy is required to make a chemical change, called Activation Energy, we need a continuous energy supply to initiate and create a new habit. You need to make sure you can generate a consistent amount of activation energy required to overcome all the challenges you may face and propel you to go for your aspirations no matter what happens!

What can you do to make it different this time and make it happen this year?

  1. Identify what goal this new resolution will help you accomplish.

  2. Visualise how achieving this goal will change your life. How does the sense of accomplishment make you feel? Feel the emotion vicariously. Does this image excite you enough to inspire you to go for it, despite whatever it takes? Does it generate the zeal, vigour and energy that makes you think you can't let it go? If the answer is no, redefine your goal to make it irresistible to accomplish.

  3. Identify the challenges you might face in continuing with this new habit. Reflect on how these challenges have obstructed your growth, and if you allow them to continue to hinder your life journey, what do you stand to lose?

  4. What changes are you going to make to your schedule? What steps do you need to take to make it happen? Do you need support and understanding from people around you?

  5. Write down your resolution, tell about it to people who care for you and let them hold you accountable. Hold yourself responsible by reflecting on your progress before you go to bed. Identify what needs to change and make a fresh start to accomplish your goal with each new day of the year!

I wish you all a great year ahead. May you accomplish all your aspirations, and may all your dreams come true!
